Whither Tunisia? The rise of an Islamist party to power in the North African country in the wake of the Arab Spring had many worried about the treatment of its small Jewish community. The return of an ancient pilgrimage on May 9th, 2012 after the cancelation the year before put some of those fears to rest, but certainly not all. Produced and edited by Gil Shefler

Tunisian Victory is an Anglo-American propaganda film about the victories in the North Africa Campaign. The film follows both armies from the planning of Operation Torch / Operation Acrobat to the liberation of Tunis. Interspersed in the pure documentary format are the narrative voices of an American and a British soldier (voiced by Burgess Meredith and Bernard Miles respectively), recounting their experience in the campaign. The British and American talk separately until the end of the film when they have a dialogue, agree to co-operate after the end of the war, with the other Allied nations to create a more just and peaceful post-war order. The film was intended as a follow-up to the successful 1943 British documentary film Desert Victory. Frederic Kromes article from The Historian Tunisian Victory and Anglo-American Film Propaganda in World War II details the acrimony between the British and US film makers on the project. Most of the actual American combat footage taken during Operation Torch was destroyed when the ship carrying it was sunk, requiring many battle scenes to be reshot in America by director John Huston.

A group of victims of Tunisia’s Arab Spring revolt sewed their lips shut to express their anger and frustration on Thursday to highlight their plight. They call themselves ‘The Injured of the Tunisian Revolution’, and have been protesting for more than one year about the lack of health care. In protest, they set camp outside the parliament’s building for over a month. However, they say the country’s authorities have ignored their demands leaving them to stage this symbolic and painful demonstration. Mohammed Snoussi said: “We’ve decided to sew our mouths because we screamed and nobody listened to us. All the commissions and administrations we’ve visited just postponed our cases.” Hamza Missaoui expressed his frustration for those some of whom were wounded during the overthrowing of president Zine ElAbidine Ben Ali’s regime in January last year. “I’m going to sew my mouth to support all those wounded in the revolution throughout the country and we’ll never forgive the MPs we’ve elected for their lack of interest in us,” said Missaoui. Meanwhile, others like Malek Aloui say they have been recently injured by police by all forms of torture some beaten or even burned by cigarettes extinguished on their bodies.
Moncef Marzouki pays tribute to those who died in country’s uprising and pledges to be “faithful to the martyrs”. Tunisia’s new president Moncef Marzouki has been sworn in in front of the country’s constituent assembly as the nation turned a new page nearly a year after the uprising that toppled Zine el Abidine Ben Ali in the first of the so-called “Arab Spring” revolutions. “I will be the guarantor of the national interests, the state of laws and institutions. I will be faithful to the martyrs and to the objectives of the revolution,” Marzouki said as he took the oath of office on Tuesday morning with his hand on the Quran. Wearing a burnous, a long traditional woollen clock, he solemnly promised to be president of all Tunisians and to do everything he could to improve the living standard of his compatriots. He paid homage to those who died during the uprising against former president Ben Ali a year ago. “Without their sacrifice, I wouldn’t be here in this place,” the former activist said with tears in his eyes. Al Jazeera’s Hashem Ahelbarra, reporting from the capital Tunis, said the speech was “very emotional”. “It was a historic moment that Tunisians will remember for generations to come,” he said. Marzouki outlined the blueprint of the government and political institutions, adding: “We’re committed to democracy and we’re going to help our friends in Syria and Yemen,” said our correspondent. He was elected with 153 votes in the 217-member constituent assembly, with …

Security concerns and threats from some Salafi Islamists kept thousands of Jewish pilgrims away from the annual Lag B’Omer celebration on the Tunisian island of Djerba this week. No more than 500 pilgrims attended the religious festival celebrated a month after Passover at one of Africa’s oldest synagogues on Wednesday and Thursday. Israel issued a travel advisory urging its citizens ahead of the festival to “avoid” visits to Tunisia this year, citing information suggesting they might come under attack.

Dear President Moncef Marzouki — We watched the recent episode of Julian Assange’s new television show, on which you appeared as a guest – with great interest. We were especially gratified to hear you personally offer Mr. Assange full political asylum in your country. He is certainly a hero, both to the world as well as to the Tunisian Revolution. However we would like to bring to your attention another human rights and information activist who also dedicated hundreds of hours to saving the lives of journalists and activists during your recent revolution, and helped to organize many cyber protests against the web sites of the then dictator Bin Ali. He is known within Anonymous as Commander X, aka Christopher Mark Doyon. www.CommanderX.tk We would also like to remind you that it was not only WikiLeaks that assisted you in your recent freedom revolution. The entire global collective of Anonymous, including Commander X – and thousands of other Anons, worked around the clock to provide invaluable assistance to the protesters in Tunisia – who are the real heroes of your revolution. After the dictator fled, and your country gained it’s freedom – your people made this video thanking Anonymous for standing by the protesters in Tunisia. youtu.be And now, just as the USA government has targeted Julian Assange for his work in information activism, it has likewise targeted Commander X – unsealing a secret grand jury indictment against Mr. Doyon for a cyber protest he organized with …
